Domo (free pattern)

This large amigurumi of Domo (the official mascot of Japan's NHK network) is the second pattern I ever attempted to design. He's basically a long cube with legs, so simple enough :-) I'm still debating whether I should give him a small crocheted guitar to play with.

Domo is made of SMC Catania cotton yarn by Schachenmayer (2.5 mm. hook) in the 157 Marone colour. His eyes are 18mm safety eyes and his mouth is made of felt scraps. He's roughly 10 inches tall, so you can scale him up or down by choosing a different type of yarn. Because Domo is so cartoony, I would suggest something smooth like mercerised cotton for a non-fuzzy effect.

Body:

In brown, chain 46.

Row 1: sc in every ch (45)
Row 2-12: sc in every stitch, ch 1 and turn (45)

From this point on, start crocheting in rounds.

Round 13: sc in every stitch of row 12, sc 3 in the corner, sc 11 in the short sides of the first 12 rows, sc 3 in the corner, sc in every ch, sc 3 in the corner, sc 11 in the short sides of the first 12 rows, sc 3 in the corner (124)

Round 14-73: sc in every stitch (124)

Put in the safety eyes (18mm used here) between rounds 20 and 21.

From this point, transition from the body to crocheting the legs. First, sc a few stitches to get your hook on the back of the toy. This is the starting point for crocheting Domo's left leg.

Round 74: Sc 52, ch 14 and ss into the first sc of the round (66)
Round 75-88: sc in every stitch (66)

To close up Domo's crotch, hold him upside down with the front side towards you. Start crocheting in the corner of the right leg.

Round 10: sc2tog every 3rd and 4th stitch (18)
Round 11-37: sc in every stitch (18)

Fasten off and use the tail to sew the arm on the side of Domo's body, between rounds 25 and 37.

Face:

Cut out a rectangle in red felt and sew this onto the front of the body roughly 5 rounds under the eyes. Cut two rows of teeth out of white felt and glue these onto the red mouth.

  1. i am trying to figure out the instruction for round 13 - I cannot seem to get that part right can you give me a bit more information or a photo of that section? Does it become the top of the Domo or is it the area where the legs will be crocheted on? My granddaughter requested that I make this plushy for her and I ordered the yarn and got to the end of row 12 and now I am stuck. eolawther@gmaildotcom
