Pride rainbow (free pattern)

If you want to show your support for the LGBTQ+ community, or just like rainbows, I figured a little patch to sow onto bags or clothing would be ideal. This simple little pattern can be made from scraps of any type of yarn as long as all the main colours of the rainbow are there. For size, it is also more advisable to use a thinner yarn and for sturdiness I would recommend cotton over wool or acrylic (end result would be quite floppy).

Pride rainbow

For this pattern I had some SMC Catania in various colours available (see list at end of pattern), but only managed 6 out of the 7 colours, although personally I do think the division of blue and indigo is a bit of a scam.

Start by chaining 15 in purple (15).

Row 1: sc in the second stitch from the needle; (2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next to stitches) x2; (sc in the next to stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) x2; 1sc in the last stitch (18). Chain 1 to turn.

Row 2: (sc in the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) x2; sc in the net 2 stitches; (2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next 3 stitches) x2 (22). Cut of yarn and pull through.

Fasten on blue in the last stitch of the previous row. Chain 1 to turn.

Row 3: sc in the next 7 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 6 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 7 stitches (24). Chain 1 to turn.

Row 4: sc in the next 6 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 2 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 4 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 2 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the last 6 stitches. Cut of yarn and pull through.

Fasten on green in the last stitch of the previous row. Chain 1 to turn.

Row 5: (sc in the next 5 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) x2; sc in the next 4 stitches; (2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 5 stitches) x2 (32). Chain 1 to turn.

Row 6: sc in every stitch (32) Cut of yarn and pull through.

Fasten on yellow in the last stitch of the previous row. Chain 1 to turn.

Row 7: (sc in the next 5 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) x2; sc in the next 8 stitches; (2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next 5 stitches) x2 (36). Chain 1 to turn.

Row 8: sc in every stitch (36). Cut of yarn and pull through.

Fasten on orange in the last stitch of the previous row. Chain 1 to turn.

Row 9: sc in the next 7 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 5 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 8 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 5 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 7 stitches (40). Chain 1 to turn.

Row 10: sc in every stitch (40). Cut of yarn and pull through.

Fasten on red in the last stitch of the previous row. Chain 1 to turn.

Row 11: sc in the next 10 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 5 stitches;  2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 6 stitches; 2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 5 stitches;  2sc in the next stitch; sc in the next 10 stitches (44). Chain 1 to turn.

Row 12: sc in every stitch (44). Cut of yarn and pull through.

Fasten of all the loose strands properly and weave them in on the back. Press the back of patch covered in a tea towel with an iron to make it nice and flat and it's ready for sewing on!

This pattern was made using a 2.00mm hook. Again, if you want this patch to be quite robust, I would recommend using a 0.5mm smaller hook size than you would normally use for the yarn you're using. The colours I used here are purple (113), blue (397), green (418), yellow (280), orange (281) and pink (114).
