Crochet bag (free pattern)

This project was originally conceived as a rainbow-themed handbag, but ended up as a bag that I keep my current crochet projects in. I've been crocheting a lot lately, and it helps keep the living room clean from bits of yarn, half-finished projects and needles.

The bag is made up of separately crocheted circles that are then sewn on top of each other. For each circle, start with a magic ring. All elements are made of SMC Catania cotton yarn for a 2-2.5mm hook.

R1. 10 dc in the magic ring (10)
R2. 2dc in every stitch (20)
R3. 2dc in every second stitch (30)
Fasten off with a slip stitch and weave in ends.

Make as many circles in as many colours as you like.  Sew them onto each other with the rims of the next circle just touching the tops of the stitches in tour 1 of the previous circle. Make two of these swatches, one for each side of the bag.

To turn your rectangle of circles into a proper bag, fasten on with white or any other contrasting colour and work around the rectangle. Starting at the top of a circle, put in the following pattern:

R1. sc in the top 3 stitches of a circle, hdc 1, 2dc in the lowest stitch between two circles, hdc 1. Repeat this for all circles. When you reach a corner, put 3 dc in one stitch to turn the corner.
R2. hdc in every previous stitch. Fasten off.

Repeat this for the other rectangle as well.

Fasten on again in your contrasting colour at the top-left corner (if right-handed) of one of the rectangles to make the sides of the bag. This part will be crocheted in rows.

R1. hdc in every stitch of the two short sides and the bottom long side. Ch 1 and turn.
R2-? Repeat these rows until you're satisfied with the size of the bag. Mine is quite narrow, but you can make it wider by adding more rows here.

Final row: take the other rectangle and connect it to the bottom and sides you just made by making sc in every side and bottom stitch of both rectangles together. Fasten off and weave in ends.

All that is left now is to sew in some lining material (I went for some children's curtain material that I impulse bought because it had turtles on them) and a zip, if you like. You can also add a strap to turn it into a handbag (my original plan).
