Kirby (free pattern)

My amigurumi version of the beloved pink blob. Kirby's Adventure was the first Nintendo game I ever played and I've loved him ever since. I'm quite happy with the crochet work on this (just a ball with feet and wings, hard to mess up), but the felt details I'm not so sure about. It looks alright from a distance, but the eyes are a little freaky up close.

Kirby's body is made of soft pink SMC Catania cotton, with Catania fuchsia feet and a little bit of darker pink for his cheeks.  

The pattern is very simple. For the body, start a magic ring in soft pink.

R1: sc6 in the ring (6).
R2: 2sc in every stitch (12)
R3: 2sc in every second stitch (18)
R4: 2sc in every third stitch (24)
R5: 2sc in every fourth stitch (30)
R6: 2sc in every fifth stitch (36)
R7: 2sc in every sixth stitch (42)
R8: 2sc in every seventh stitch (48)
R9: 2sc in every eight stitch (54)
R10: 2sc in every ninth stitch (60)
R11-20: sc in every stitch (60)
R21: sc every 9th and 10th stitch together (54)
R22: sc every 8th and 9th stitch together (48) 
R23: sc every 7th and 8th stitch together (42) 
R24: sc every 6th and 7th stitch together (36) 
R25: sc every 5th and 6th stitch together (30) 
R26: sc every 4th and 5th stitch together (24)
R27: sc every 3rd and 4th stitch together (18)

Stuff the body

R28: sc every 2nd and 3rd stitch together (12)
R29: sc every 1st and 2nd stitch together (6)


Fasten off and thread the tail through the 6 stitches to close the gap.

Wings/arms (make 2):

In soft pink, chain 6.
R1: sc along the sides of the chain, increasing in the 5th and 9th stitch (10)
R2: 2sc in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 10th stitch (14)
R3: 2sc in the 7th and 14th stitch (16)
R4: 16sc
Fasten off and leave enough tail to sew onto the side of the body. You can stuff these if you want, but it's not necessary. 

Feet (make 2): 

In fuchsia pink, chain 7.
R1: crocheting along both sides of the chain, 2sc in every stitch on both sides (12)
R2: 2sc in every 2nd stitch (18)
R3: 2sc in every 3rd stitch (24)
R4: crochet this round only in the back loops. 2sc in every 4th stitch (30)
R5: 30 sc (30)
R6: sc together every 4th and 5th stitch (24)
R7: sc together every 3rd and 4th sc (18)
R8: sc together the 7th and 8th, 9th and 10th and 11th and 12th stitch (15)
R9: sc together the 6th and 7th and 9th and 10th stitch (13)

Fasten off, stuff and sew onto the body.

For the finishing touches, embroider some blush on his cheeks and cut out some small felt details for his eyes. Glue these on with textile adhesive.

This ant was the first amigurumi pattern I ever wrote, around 3 or 4 years ago. It is made of simple spheres sewn together to resemble an ant's body. Simple, but effective, if I may say so myself. Domo (free pattern)

This large amigurumi of Domo (the official mascot of Japan's NHK network) is the second pattern I ever attempted to design. He's basically a long cube with legs, so simple enough :-) I'm still debating whether I should give him a small crocheted guitar to play with.  Domo is made of SMC Catania cotton yarn by Schachenmayer (2.5 mm. hook) in the 157 Marone colour. His eyes are 18mm safety eyes and his mouth is made of felt scraps. He's roughly 10 inches tall, so you can scale him up or down by choosing a different type of yarn. Because Domo is so cartoony, I would suggest something smooth like mercerised cotton for a non-fuzzy effect.   Body: In brown, chain 46.   Row 1: sc in every ch (45) Row 2-12: sc in every stitch, ch 1 and turn (45)   From this point on, start crocheting in rounds.   Round 13: sc in every stitch of row 12, sc 3 in the corner, sc 11 in the short sides of the first 12 rows, sc 3 in the corner, sc in every ch, sc 3 in the corner, sc 11 in ...

Koffing (free pattern)

Yet another Pokémon from the classic series that is easily turned into a crocheted form is Koffing, the purple sphere that can excrete poison fumes and evolve into Weezing. The only real challenge here was to come up with believable tubes, as Koffing's body can be made using a standard pattern for a sphere.  The tubes are a little big and I think there ought to have been more, but it's an amigurumi and it's the cuteness that matters. Again, my laziness and fear of mucking things up by embroidering badly have meant that all the other details are glued on felt.  Koffing was made from my staple cotton amigurumu yarn SMC Catania in dark purple (113) with felt details in white, black, red and light brown.
